7th Heavy rain storm all day, so could not do anything. Brought a large stream of water in the wash.
Andy began school.

*When I was a child going to school in southern Utah in the town of Tropic, we often played during recess in the 'wash, or warsh' which was basically a dry creek bed cutting through a deep layer of sandy soil. It would only have water in it when there was rain and acted as a kind of natural storm drain. A wash could be dangerous if there was rain somewhere upstream with the possibility of a sudden torrent of water coming like a dirty wall full of sticks and brush to sweep the unwary off their feet. Greenhorns might choose to camp on the soft, level sand of a large wash with sometimes a streamlet running through the middle of it and have a sudden disaster as rain upstream created a flood that could wash (hence the term for it) them and their camp away.
Our little wash by the school was usually dry and there was little danger of flood so we were allowed to play in it. The water had scooped out a small cave under the roots of a tree or some brush that we could creep into and carve out little niches and shelves for treasures and play house in. It had that kind of magical feel to it that small spaces do for children. -Marilu
