For over a week Luther is reporting work in the brick yard, making up to 5,000 bricks a day. He doesn't mention anyone else in this project so we are left to wonder if this was his own project or was he working for someone and was he part of a team of workers? The work would have been strenuous.  Our family saw a demonstration of brick making in Nauvoo and the set up and manufacture of the bricks including the kiln and firing process are very portable and could be set up in any vacant lot.

There is a Democratic rally that he attends to hear the Honorable Frank J. Cannon speak.
The brick works takes up days and days, but there is still a day or two off to loaf around town, and go for a ride with friends, including several young ladies with a trip out to the farm of two of the young ladies' to get some melons. Sundays are usually taken up at least partly with attendance at meetings including an evening meeting on the 21st where President Duffin of the Western states mission was the speaker. He may have spoken at the earlier meetings in the day also.

"Went to Mutual" This is the youth organization of the church, held once a week on a week day.
"After meeting went in company with Isabel Pierce, Miss Lula Parker, Mrs C. Hall, and Brother Sinsbery to Mrs. Hall's home and ate grapes and ?ammons? (Persimmons?). On our way home Miss Parker and Brother Sinsberry jumped in creek accidentally"
This is the first reference we see to Lula Parker whose brother was Robert Leroy Parker, better known as 'Butch Cassidy' the well known outlaw. Later Luther was to have an encounter with Butch that has gone down in the annals of our family history.

November 1st starts with the brick yard and ends with choir practice. The next day is the first day Luther mentions going to school. He went to school in the morning and back to the 'factory' in the afternoon. He ended the day with a social gathering at Mrs. Crawfords in the evening.
It is interesting to note that he at one point got a letter from his mother, so he wasn't living at home and is out working with some school and social life at the age of sixteen, something we wouldn't consider for our 16 year old sons now. He mentions Uncle Dave several times so it may be he was staying with his uncle, and he mentions a boy's boarding house but doesn't say he is living there. Wherever he is living, he seems to have complete freedom to go wherever he likes whenever, and to search out different jobs. He is often in Washington, often in St. George and doesn't seem to have anyone supervising him, but he works, goes to church, and socializes and seems to take a fairly mature and responsible charge of his life.
