Luther M and Beatrice S Winsor 1962 Letters to Lu and Wickie
Jan 10, 1962
(notes written on the side of the page:)
Aunt Theresa is making remarkable progress. She hopes to move into her home in the spring.
How did the children take Posies' death? So sorry they had to lose her.
Dearest Wickie,
This is for all of you of course, but I assume Lu isn't there as yet. I do hope he was able to locate something nice for you in housing.
I am so sorry about the dollar bills, but that's me especially this Christmas. I felt so disappointed about the family sheet that I tried to make up the difference some other way at the last moment. the two new babies could hardly be recognized, Bruce crying & Scottie a 'Blur" The variety in all the pictures - (one from a slide, another Polaroid, etc.) One day we'll get the one we planned. I gave too short a notice.
I'm so glad you had a lovely Xmas together before having to change location. Your branch will sorely miss you - but I am so relieved, Lu you are through with police duty. That knee of yours sounds like more trouble.
There are so many I know who are in the same spot. Harold Bowman had to have the knee cap removed-has been suffering with it for years. Please to not neglect it in any way. The Cortisone you use sounds like there was some arthritic tendency. Our days work is complicated enuf without a handicap like that.
The clippings were so interesting. I will wait for R.R. and send them around -also your letter if you do not mind. My, what a beautiful country for a "snow fairyland." i long to see the place where you have had such fascinating experiences.
I'm sure Lu will enjoy the Samsonite luggage - with so much traveling coming up.
Wickie, you must find time to write more. (meaning, creative writing to publish-Marilu) Why isn't it possible for us to read your articles-the last one about Saturday night Beans? Which Reader's Digest number was it? We congratulate you dear-that talent must be used. I think you are very plucky to plan for more education. I took a few courses when my family was young in Logan but never accumulated any credit - I've always regretted it.
We had a quiet but pleasant Xmas and all of us 'on the go'. Ken's friends first visit of course to Salt lake. Sightseeing , church functions and visiting. 'David Bonilla is 17, so Ken feels like a parent all at once. they get along just fine. Dave is shy and quiet, speaks good English & needs care from the right source. Quite short and good looking. Each is a great help to the other.
My 'show' was was good experience but not very profitable. I sold one big cottonwood picture ($100) to Dick Turley (Vernon's son) and two miniatures to Nan & Hugh Crutchfield. Nan is Dad's niece. It was a busy time, nobody has money out here. Strangers are those who buy-Ray Nilson (furniture) sent their in. decorator in to check me over. Several distinguished people came in but no buys.
If I could truck my paintings down to Jimi at Chico he says he could sell them like Hot-cakes.
The lovely gifts you sent us are choice. - We thank you so much ---and you didn't have time to do Xmas. Oh boy how you did it! The basket is a gem & the broom-it has an honored place by the hearth. the stationary is just beautiful-I shall be proud to use it.
Dad is off to get an X-Ray this a.m. There seems to be an obstruction in the colon. I hoope it is not serious. I have a new class of 16 & 17 year olds in Sunday School genealogy. They are an answer to my prayers. I can do something with them.
I hope this reaches you.
Our love to you all. God Bless You & keep you
Affectionately, Mom

Dearest Luther, Wickie and
Your Lovely Family
this will be only a short letter
1. To let you know again Luther how proud we are that your devoted service is being recognized and, somewhat, appreciated. You are leaving an area that is lovely, you have many friends there whom you will miss. But you will soon have others, and you are all in a splendid environment and will soon learn to love it. Some time will lapse while you are becoming adjusted but it will soon pass. The important thing is that you as a family are the most necessary consideration. And you, Mary Lu, and you, Mark, are entering or about to enter the most important periods of your lives. Please remember two things, among all the others:
A. Dad and Mom love you. They want you to get started right. They may not always agree with what you think you want; but they will always advise you right or they will tell you if what they advised is changed by circumstance. And from us, always, yes always, avoid company that is wrong, then you will never make friendships that need not be broken.
2. We have written Pat and Ken and have given them your new address. As we see it the R.R. should go to you from Ken, then to Pat and Marsh, then to us.
We are O.K. except that Mom is fighting a cold. She was at the "library" yesterday and took more than one walk out in the cold, and on damp wet pavements or in a light fall of snow.
Last night the wind blew hard all night but it is from the south and the temperature is above freezing
Yesterday I helped at the "Font" with 745 baptisms, then went through for an endowment. Day before yesterday I did one endowment, then went to the funeral service of the Little Old Man, Bro. Limberley. You, Luther may remember him 35 years or more ago in Logan when he came with castors for our beds and tables, and, he sold us the black currant roots that we planted at the Castle.
Lovingly Dad & Mom

Dearest Wickie & Lu and the children.
We are sorry to be so late returning this house plan and brochure. we surely like the selection you made. It's a shame you had to go through repairs just as you arrived. I hope by now you are relaxed and in routine. Looks like a whole new world is opening up for you.
Your record Lu has been so exemplary & full of rich, hard experiences. I hope you will enjoy the new program equally well. We are so proud of your writing talent Wickie. When are we going to read your articles? How do we find "Saturday Night Beans? The family is on tip-toe waiting to read your articles.
We started our six week missionary meetings in our home with three neighbors who know very little concerning our church. Light refreshments first, then the lesson (using the flannel board) & fellowshipping closing the evening. Adding this new activity to our already crowded week we have very little time left over. I think we are doing fairly well health wise - I must get my eyes checked again with so much strain they've been getting. a longer letter next time - I must get off to Sunday School. I have 17 teenager, (16 & 17 years) in my genealogy class. they eat it up. Means a lot of preparation. Love & Kisses to all of you-& thanks so much for keeping us posted-for now
Your doting Parents,
Mom & Dad

Dearest Wickie & Luther,
(Typed)
It seems so long since we had a letter and wondered if we had said or done anything wrong. I know you are both very busy and I am foolish to worry. Dad had sent you a letter to ask for your signature, Luther. These bonds that have matured most of them anyway are made with yours and dad's signatures. We have to change them to 'or' instead of 'and'. If one of you pass on the other could not cash them and the attorneys would get the best part of it. These bonds I am speaking of are the ones you gave us each month in payment of a loan. If there is a misunderstanding please let us know. A cool spring seems to have arrived. plenty of sunshine today but cool going around corners. We are so tired of winter and I am sure you are.
(Handwritten portion)
Mom started this letter but stopped when I told her that we had a "bum steer" about the bonds. Any way it seems that we can "get by" without the papers I sent you to sign.
I must be a "dummy" but I do not remember a thing about these bonds. maybe you do-
We are desperate to find some way out- Our income has been reduced so much that we shall have to make every dollar count. The sad thing is that our savings are nearly worthless-only 17 cents on a dollar. But so far we are managing OK-and we shall try to get by somehow.
Mom was not feeling so good when I came home today-But she rested for 3 hours and seems to be OK now-She had started out with a class of 16 & 17 yr. olds in Sunday School (Genealogical work) and was doing fine. But the Stake Superintendent said they mustfollow the course outlined for them- so she stopped with her last class Sunday. It has been hard for her to take- There is a lot to it of course.
Last night we had a Stake Genealogical meeting and one of the Stake Presidency was there- He heard something about our situation and he will probably do something about it.
Mom is spending much time at the Genealogical Library. I tried it for a while, but I am having better success at the Temple, so I go there about 5 days per week. One of those days I aid in the baptisms. I do two shifts and we usually baptize about 750.
We had a "wet" snow last week that trimmed many trees. (Broke branches down) I have been until tonight getting them cleaned up.
We are anzious to know how you are, and how the change is working out.
Lovingly-
Dad- Grandpa-

Dear Wickie:
Your letter received and in answer to your question about R.R. I would think if you send it on and we can forward back to Lu the Chico letters and our old ones and ask Ken to forward the ones up to him. It takes so long to get one RR around that perhaps Lu Should let us have a report occasionally when & if he does have a little time. I hope your hard work is soon over. You should have a man's help. we appreciate your keeping us up to date, Love, Mom & Dad

Dear Luther, Wickie & Family-
By now you will know more about the new bureau that Kennedy administration has created, and will be able to tell us more about your future plans, in which we are very much interested; but which we have no wish to have a part in shaping. You,with the inspiration of the Lord to which you are very much entitled, if you ask Him in faith,-- will be able to determine what is best for you to do.
Wever since 1932 there has been a tremendous increase in Federal Bureaus, and Federal Payrolls. There is in Washington D.C. a Bureau of "Spenders," who devote their eintire time in finding more ways to "waste" tax payers money. Inflation has gone steadily on until now it takes over $4.00 to buy as much as $1.00 would buy before 1932. but there seems to be nothing we can do about it; at least little we can do. It is necessary that some of the people who live in the United States, -they are not Americans whilde they act and vote as they do, -be informed and caused to "turn about"
I must not ramble on thus.
We are concerned about you, and your future. This seems to be a time for change. The old smelter at Garfield has been taken over by Kennecot, the owners and operators of Bingham Mine, and is now in the hands of a "smart alec" who thinks he know better what to do. He will "wake up" some day when he has lost part of the smelter by flood. most of the operating staff went over with the Smelter.
We are enclosing a clipping of the death notice of James A. Faust, which mom saved for you.
Mom and I are getting on OK. Mom spends all her time, even while the television is on, at Genealogical work. She takes a day out once per week for painting. She goes to a class when she can, - usually every week. She has done some beautiful work.
We expect to carry on and on, I don't know how long, but we hope for a long time yet. Our financial status is OK yet but if money values continue to drop, I don't know! Any way we are out of debt and have a little put by.
I neglected to say that I too tried Genealogical work, but I have much difficulty. Therefore I go to the temple. For two months I was able to go through for two names, -two proxies,- in one day. But on account of lack of names the temple has been forced to cut out two sessions. now I just do one name a day. But I go early, soon after 6 AM,-I also go each Friday and assist in baptism of 350- 750"proxies.
Lovingly, Dad & Mom
Written on the side of the page in Bea's handwriting:
Dear Lu: How we appreciated the time you took "on the road" to write us. Dad neglected to say I'm on vacation from Gen. library work. They've been moving to a new set-up at Montgomery Ward's old building. Even so I've kept the typewrited going just the same, only when I was not housecleaning.

Dearest Luther , Wickie and the Grand children.
I have but a few minutes before leaving for a scout appointment in town. But I do want to write you direct- It is regarding the New Bureau created in Washington. (They are surely running true to form.- 100 or more "persons", not men, in Washington to do the jobs formerly handles by one.)
By now you will know more about the situation. Any way you will be guided aright if you are humble and confide in the Lord.
We are anxious to know more about it.
Must go now- Love you all- and hope to see you.
Dad
In my hurry I must have sealed an empty envelope. Guess I'm old-Dad-

Dearest Wickie & Lu
We were so happy to hear again from you Wickie-I believe Dad has written you but I haven't Thank you forthe lovely silk blouse as a "mother's Day" gift-What a lovely thing!I think I've never seen a moer attractively finished & tailored one. Thank you. You know don't you that cards fill the bill nicely and what beautiful ones there were this year.
We have decided not to go to Calif. until September. However, Pat's situation requires some solution. She ison the edge of a break-down tied down with her family and continued illness of one kind or another for many months. Colds most of the time. Not only this (any mother expects a certain amount) but Marsh all has been away so much and now he's home& will be teaching all summer he has spent all his evenings until midnight with rebuilding a sports-car if you please! Those children need a father so much & this is what they get. He never will grow up & seems to depend upon cars for satisfaction. Family life is a side-show. No responsibility.
Marshall wanted Pat to drive home with the five children for the summer-can you imagine Pat in her condition watching out for the restless "five" & drive too?So I figure i'd better go back and give her a little break but I wanted to find out if possible if your plans to come home had materialized. If you would be home the last 2 weeks of June I could go see you after a week with Pat. I cannot pry Dad away from home & he will want to work at the temple till the end of June.
We've attended four sealing sessions this month all ready-they are pushing all the ordinance work now because of the enforced vacation afterwards when the Annex will be torn down & replaced with a new enlarged area. I hope if you come home fefore June 30 you will bring your recommends. We've had continued hard rains for several days now. Wonderful for Utah!
Love to every one of you, Mom & Dad

Dearest Wickie & Lu & Family,
Here I am after a 'jet" flight yesterday morning. It's so good to be here and find things as favorable as they are. The baby is having digestive trouble still-no-b0dy seems to know what to do. If they just had one good pediatrician!
Pat is in good spirits though and I am getting acquainted with the children all over again. How they have grown!
I will probably be coming to Richmond the first week in July or sooner. I am giving myself one month. Dad will be leaving home this morning for Bear Lake country (a lake to be made for Boy Scouts). More later.
I cannot tell you much yet but when I get there we'll talk about everything. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to get away from my problems.
Until I see you then---love & kisses all round
Yours always
Mom

Dearest Wickie, Luther & Family--
Mom is home safely - but she is very much worn out. She has lost 6 pounds more than the prescribed weight she should carry (according to her statment) and I am unable to do much about it. She has followed instructions from her doctors, -and her own ideas. So there isn't much for me to do-particularly when she does not want my comments.
Any way we are pleased to have her home again and --- we are very grateful to you for your very splendid treatment of her while she was with you.
Now we are anxious about you and your future and we shall be happy when you are finally settled again- and "are on yourway". Far be it from me to say what you should do. I have said enough already. Maybe too much. Anyhow you know how I feel, and you have had a chance to get Mom's reactions already.
We have our own convictions.
It is not right for us to say anything it is "up to you" what conclusions you reach and particularly it is "up to you" to decide what course you desire to follow. Sometimes parents make the mistake of dictation, and of planning too much for their children.
We have today from Carol-Gay and Bruce, about their new baby. How time does fly! We are pleased that you have such a lovely group in Richmond and that the family have been well received.
Lovingly Dad
(Note added by Bea, references visit of daughter Bea)
July 18th P.M. I was so knocked out this morning as Bea left to go over to Bountiful, I asked Dad to send you a note for me. Ray & Dennis are expected home today. The care was damaged when riding over a bad road and a part broken that had to be replaced- had to send for it. The family will be back over tomorrow before going on home. Scottie and Jimmy are full of what it takes to wreck a house. They've had no restrictions & Colleen & Susan have just about turned them Loose when they look after them. The terrible twos! Nevertheless we've enjoyed their sweetness and have had a good visit. When I arrived the dysentery still was going strong & I was terribly weakened. I got by on the plane and ate nothing until I had reached the house.Dr. McConklin gave me another prescription which worked immediately And I've been free up to now. How can I thank you for everything- your tender care & love. I'll write again. Bye for now.
Love
Mom Hug the children for me.

Dearest Wickie, Lu and the children;
Please forgive me for neglecting to write for such a long time. I have written but not since Lu's two letters arrived. We were so pleased to hear from you. and, it was nice you could meet each other in Washington. I was so unhappy I could not enjoy that part of my visit.
I am now back to normal except that there is always an ever-present tendency to this colitis. Guess I'll have to stay with the bland foods from here on. The prescription's effectiveness was not too good. I think my chiropractor fixed me up really. the peristalsis has to be toned down after so long a time going the other way.
We've had nice cool temperatures at night since I came home and it hasn't been too warm day times. Always a little breeze. Now we come to a break in our routine when our tenants leave next week and our electric wires have to be torn out in the basement to separate them and put their line on a new meter. we already have the place rented- a newly wedded couple as usual. they will move in on the fifteenth.
I have been working on you lighthouse watercolor since i came home. It has been a pleasure and i think it's going to please you. The size worries me, no I have finished it. In the basic sheet it is 30 X 22 and when framed will add 6 inches. So, when you hang it you will need one whole wall for it. I mean you cannot group it with other pictures. the light house itself seemed to need expansion to make it the focal point. You can see when you come home. I have had it blocked and matted and will cover it with cellophane for protection. The card I painted it from says Bass Harbor. Is that right I thought it was Bar Harbor.
I guess you children have all been busy in summer school or other things. Wayne, do you still love your little girl friend? I hope you are all happy and well. We think of you constantly and pray for your welfare and happiness.
I am teaching the Gospel Doctrine class this morning so I need some prayers too. I must check on my preparation. God bless you, one and all.
:Lovingly, Mom

My Son--
Your birthday will be here soon, and I have a few minutes before catching the 1249 bus to the dentist's. So I want to spend the time with you and your lovely family.
I have been to town already - but i forgot my "lowers" (Some-day you may know what I mean) The dentist wants to tighten them a bit so I had to come back home for them. I did not have an appointment and went in for one. He happened to have two o'clock open so I took it rather than go next Thursday. I still have Dr. Sprunt who you knew in University Ward. He is now Bishop Sprunt or he has been.
Monday I went to Overton, then to St. George then to "Winsor" dam on Santa Clara above Ivins, then to Washington where we picked up some grapes, (last of the year, season) also some pomegranates, then back home. I went with Leslie Staples, one of my old men. He paid over $100.00 for the plane fare. But he thought it best to do it since in that way he really saved a little on a man who flew to Overton with me after picking me up in early morning. Les went down by pick-up two days earlier and met some of the people in Upper Muddy Valley who want some drainage work done. The other man will close the deal and look after some business regulations then drive the pick-up back. Les pays him $100.00 per day for the time he spends. Les came back to see the Ivins Job in which he is already interested. They have had a flood recently that damaged the down stream portion of the dam. I took pictures and have just left the film for development. You may recall that this dam was damaged once before. Les did the repair work. I helped the People of Ivans save the dam at that time when some of the foolish water-users wanted to let it wash out. The local people wanted the Government to fix it, I said no. But they were not satisfied until they got an estimate of $175,00.00 from Army Engineers, who required them to arrange all financial details. Finally I procured $12000.00 for them through the church, gave them my time, and they and Les made the repair. Now it is necessary to do a little more but the new Presiding Bishop wants more detail which I can now give him.
So far I have only written about my activity; but I know you will be please that I am still going. Mom too. She is now down at Genealogical Library, and spends most of ther time that way. I have been quite busy finishing my history. Bob Murray's son Fenton is going to print it, and we are trying to get it ready for all of you for Christmas. Guess we'll make it this time.
Son, I am pleased with what you have done and what you are doing. It begins to look a little better Nationally. It looks now as if the people are beginning to "wake up" just a little. Mom and I seem to have 'hit the Jack pot" this time. But just now George Romney seems to be somewhat doubtful. The Tribune this morning published his picture and gave him credit as a winner; but I heard in town that there is still a question.
For 18 years I have questioned the sanity of the american people in supporting Franklin D the way they did. Now the tide has changed just a little. I hope that you two are with us. Lovingly, - Dad
P.S. We love you, all, and are anxious about the children It does not matter about Mom and me
Dec 3 1962
Dear Luther & Wickie-
I am at home, alone, because Mom is down at the Genealogical Library today. She goes on Wednesday in order to spend the entire day there. Sometimes, usually on other days too. I have been down to Sugarhouse, and picked up our electric clock that was in for repairs. It is now on the wall in our kitchen and is running We have missed it.
I had quite a time to find a "waxed end" (a heavy thread used for sewing heavy leather & c. ) I have a pair of moccasins made of heavy leather that I procured in the City of Quebec, Canada, when i was there, (about 1956) One side had some stitches that were broken, making quite a gap. repair was needed but it required a "waxed" end and a heavy needle. I had some heavy darning needles but I broke two of them. Then I remembered that you had sent me some heavy needles, so I went ba k to the room that is filled and found them. I also found and read your note saying"we have had a hard time to find something you can use:. If I had not hanged onto the little package I would not have it now. But I did and the moccasin is fixed, and feels fine again.
The needles were enclosed in a little case that had contained a Craftsman knife. You sent me a Craftsman knife for Christmas I think. Any way it is a good one and it has served me well. Thanks again for all.
The paper upon which I am writing was also sent by you. But you have a family to plan for now-and we need nothing. Therefore please do not worry about us.
I'll leave the other side for mom when she is home. But she will be tired, so please do not expect much-
Lovingly -Dad-
Dear Lu & Wickie As far as I can, I want you to know I'm always remembering you in my thots if I do not get around to writing very often. The R.R. moving so slowly this time made it seem a long, long time between 'New" of family and now Christmas is upon us. we should all be free with our letters and "stingy" about money. Except as we can help Polly & Jim a little bit. Please "make do" for us with your greetings. They are the sweetest part.
Did you receive the book Lu for you birthday-& Wickie was the small birthday package in time for the 29th?
I am pushing my research every day so I can get these old compiled records thru before the "computer" starts to do our sheets in January. I spent quite a bit of time with Aunt Theresa last month - stayed over at night - twice. She has some tricky problems with Viola who cares for her.One doesn't know another until you start to live together. Love you all very much. Our Greetings to the children. Love, Mom
Dec 27 1962
Dearest Wickie & Lu,
Bea lost all the family addresses I sent her twice so has asked me to forward this lovely Card on to you. Our Christmas was uneventful, quiet & calm - we heard from all the family but you and Kenneth. Still worried about you & hope there is no illness. Otherwise it's pretty slim.
It's 6 degrees above zero around here & we hate to leave the house. Very little moisture.
We are glad to have Christmas over of course - and back in the groove again. If the day ever comes when just one of our children settles down here what a day that will be! We think of you all constantly and pray for your health & happiness. God bless you & watch over you. Our love to each one of you. Mom & Dad
